The Portuguese tenor Mario Alves was born in Perafita and concluded his Singing Studies in Gaia with the soprano Fernanda Correis. He studied then in Turin, Treviso and Genova.
He won the 2nd prize in the IV Luísa Todi singing contest.
After his debut as Sempronio in Haydn's Lo Speziale in Porto he was engaged to work at the Lisbon Opera House (Teatro Nacional de São Carlos) where he sang Ferrando (Cosi fan Tutte), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Pedrillo (Entfuhrung aus dem Serail), Conde de Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia); Nemorino (L'Elisir d'Amore); Peter, Mr.Keen, Lucien e Counsel for the Defense (The English Cat), St. Stephen (Four Saints in Three Acts), Ali (Adina), Le Clerc (Jeanne d'Arc au Boucher) and Ivan (Le Nez).
He also sang Nemorino (L'Elisir d'Amore) in Tokyo, Kyoto, Sapporo and Takamatsu, Pedrillo in Bari and San Sebastian and other roles as Agenore (Il Re Pastore), Aronne (Mosè in Egitto), Captain MacHeath (Beggar's Opera), Albert (Albert Herring), Herr M. (Neues vom Tage), Paolino (Il Matrimonio Segreto), La Théière, L'Arithmetique e LA Rainette (L'Enfant et les Sortileges), Dom Gilvaz (Guerras de Alecrim e Mangerona), Proteu (As Variedades de Proteu), Governador (O Doido e a Morte), Harry (Fanciulla del West), Maintop (Billy Budd), Le Berger (Oedipus Rex), Beppe (Pagliacci), Leandro (La Spinalba), Irmão (O Outro Fim) e Harlekin (Der Kaiser von Atalantis).
Last season he appeared as Froh (Rheingold) conducted by Stefan Anton Reck, Tamino (Zauberflote) at the Lisbon's S. Carlos, Pulcinella (Stravinsky) with Gabrielle Ferro in Palermo, Oedipus Rex with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, and Cassio in Tenerife with Jose Cura as Otello.
He sang in major houses as La Fenice (Venice) Teatro Regio (Turin), La Monnaie (Bruxels), Piccini (Bari), BAM Theatre (New York), Fraschini di Pavia, San Sebastian, Macau, Tokyo.
In the concert repertoire he sang Requiem and C minor Mass by Mozart, Magnificat by Bach, Messiah by Haendel, Messa di Gloria by Puccini, Petite Messe Sollenelle by Rossini, Te Deum by Bruckner, Stabat Mater by Dvorak, 9th Symphony by Beethoven, Pulcinella by Stravinsky, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff
He regularly performs in recital with pianists J. P. Santos, J. Magalhães e J. Mota.
He recorded to the labels RCA Victor, BMG, AboutMusic, Portugaller and Numerica.
