Thomas Johannes Mayer
Baritone
Began his musical education on the piano and the flute when he was 8 years old. After studying history, German literature, philosophy and music pedagogy, he successfully completed his vocal training at the College of Music in Cologne with Liselotte Hammes and Kurt Moll.
His international career took off in the 2007/08 season when he performed the title role in Berg's Wozzeck (directed by Jürgen Flimm) at La Scala in Milan, which subsequently engaged him as Posa in Don Carlo.
Since then, he made guest appearances at many opera houses, including De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, the Theater in Basel, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Komische Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, the Aalto Theater in Essen, the Staatsoper in Hamburg, the opera houses in Cologne and Leipzig, La Scala in Milano, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Opéra National de Paris, the New National Theatre Tokyo, the Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and the Zurich Opera House. He also performed at the Bregenz Music Festival, the Herodus Atticus Festival in Athens, the Bayreuth Festival and the Salzburg Festival.
Highlights among his past performances include the roles of Vautrin in Trompe la mort and Mizgir in Snegurochka at the Opera Bastille Paris, Wotan/Wanderer at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich (conductor: Kent Nagano), Wotan at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin (conductor: Daniel Barenboim), Wotan at the Deusche Oper Berlin (conductor: Sir Simon Rattle), Amfortas (conductor: Donald Runnicles) and Wotan/Wanderer at the Opéra National de Paris (conductor: Philippe Jordan), Wotan (conductor: Zubin Metha) at the Palau de les Arts Reine Sofia in Valencia, Iago in Otello at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Wotan/Wanderer at De Nederlandse Opera, Jochanaan at the Staatsoper Hamburg and Staatsoper unter den Linden Berlin, Barak in Die Frau Ohne Schatten in a new production at the Leipzig Opera House (conductor: Ulf Schirmer) and Telramund at the Bayreuth Festival.
Several opera houses have already engaged him for future performances, including the roles Telramund in Lohengrin at the Royal Opera House London, Tamare in Die Gezeichneten at the Zurich Opera, Vodnik in Rusalka at the Opera Bastille Paris, Don Pizarro in Fidelio at the Staatsoper Wien, Wotan in Die Walküre at the Teatro Real Madrid.

...un sorprendente Barak: Thomas Johannes Meyer, forse il più applaudito alla fine (nell'ambito di un pieno successo collettivo). A suo favore gioca una voce scura e sicura, ben proiettata e perfettamente sostenuta da fiati ampi e sapienti. Oltre ad un buon fraseggio la sua prova è resa completa anche dal giusto physique du rôle da grande lavoratore teutonico.
