Thandiswa Mpongwana
Mezzo-Soprano
Born in South Africa in the city of Cape Town Thandiswa Mpongwana started singing in primary school. At the age of 18 she conducted the school choir.
After finishing high school, she applied to study music at the University of Cape Town (South African College of Music) where she graduated with Distinction in Vocal Studies in 2019. The following year she finished her Advanced Diploma in Opera with the Dean’s Merit Award and got her Post Graduate Diploma with Distinction in Music (specializing in Opera) under the
guidance of Mr. Patrick Tikolo. Amongst the roles she performed during her studies at the University of Cape Town are Fidalma in Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto, Annio in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito and Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi.
In 2019 she won the 1st prize at the Schock Foundation contest and in 2022 she was a finalist of the Neue Stimmen international singing competition
In 2022 she became a member of Opéra de Lyon opera studio, selected among more than 1000 participants. At the Opéra de Lyon she has sung Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Paquette (Candide), Stimme von oben (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Mademoiselle Dangeville (Adriana Lecouvreur) and Wowkle (La Fanciulla del West).
